SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS - BCEC97

           Bio-Computing and Emergent Computation
                      Skovde, Sweden
                   September 1-2, 1997

                   2nd Call for Papers

Biocomputing and emergent computation are interdisciplinary research
areas spanning biology, computer science, and artificial
intelligence. Future generation computation will be characterised by
the use of models and paradigms based on developments in biomolecular
science and cellular biology.

There is an urgent need for collaboration and cross-fertilisation of
ideas between researchers adopting biologically motivated and
biologically inspired computing paradigms (e.g artificial life,
evolutionary computation, neural computation, computational molecular
biology, autonomous adaptive agents).

BCEC97 invites researchers to submit papers exploring: 1) the present
and future state of Biocomputation, and 2) the relations between the
various subfields of Biocomputation and the possiblities for their
future integration.

BCEC97 is intended to be a general forum for presenting and
disseminating current research in biocomputing and emergent
computation. The aims are to strengthen this research area in Sweden
and to discuss and identify:

- common approaches, models and techniques
- appropriate levels for explaining emergent computation and cognition
- future developments in biological hardware and bioengineering
- short-term and long-term applications

- Computational biology
- Biologically based neural computation
- Artificial life
- Implications for cognitive science and artificial intelligence
- Biologically inspired evolutionary computation
- Biological hardware and wetware

We particularly welcome papers exploring areas of
overlap between these topics. Papers in related areas are
also welcome.

The conference will be held in Skövde, in the south of Sweden, 1 hour
by train from Gothenburg and 2 hours by train from Stockholm, both
with international airports. The conference venue is located in the
city centre, close to conference accomodations and train station.

The last day for early registration is June 14. Registration forms
will be available at the conference web-site or by contacting the

Last day for submission of full papers is March 1 1997. The conference
language is English. Instructions for authors are available at
http://www.his.se/ida/~bcec/. Accepted papers and the papers from
invited speakers will appear in the conference proceedings. It is
intended to publish the proceedings in the Springer Verlag series
LNCS, Lecture Notes in Computer Science.
